Around 500 serving or former soldiers of the British Army were convicted by military courts martial or civil crimes and were subsequently transported to Western Australia.  Not all these men fought in the Crimean War – some arrived before that conflict, some were too young, others were in regiments not engaged in the conflict. No record was made of the men’s former regiment in the transportation registers or Convict Establishment records in Western Australia, thus proof of their involvement in the Crimean War has been difficult. If their convictions occurred during their period of service, it ensured the forfeiture of a military pension (and in rare cases their medals), thus Chelsea Pension discharge documents are not available. Below are a selection of convicts who have been identified as Crimean War veterans; there may be many more whose services in the Campaign remain (as yet) unsubstantiated.

Ticket of Leave: A Ticket of leave was granted before the expiration of a prisoner’s sentence. Ticket of leave men were free to seek employment under a master or to seek their own work. They were not allowed to leave the district to which they had been assigned and were required to report to the local resident magistrate once per month.

Conditional Pardon: Conditional Pardons freed convicts and were granted on the condition that convicts did not return to Britain. Original copies of the pardons were sent to England and duplicates remained in Australia. Copies were also given to convicts as a proof of pardon.

For researchers wishing to find their way around the extensive collection of convict records in the Western Australian State Records Office (on film and microfilm) or online at ancestry.com, there is no better guide than ‘Convict Records of Western Australia: Research Guide, Friends of the Battye Library, 2016′.
